Visiting Herdade da Malhadinha Nova - Alentejo
21-08-2018Winery, restaurant and boutique hotel at the heart of the Baixo Alentejo.
On Friday 13 July we arrived at the Malhadinha Nova estate in Alentejo. It's a beautiful estate with ofcourse the winery, luxe accommodations with swimmingpool, a remarkable restaurant and agriculture activities. It took some time to find the winery but it was worth it in every way.
There are 10 sumptuous guest rooms and suites in a restored farmhouse. We had a great room and we loved our stay. All in all, this place is as good as it gets for wine lovers and there's a big range of outdoor activities on offer as well as a subterranean spa.
Wine, the pillar of Mediterranean civilisation and culture, is the central theme at Malhadinha and is everywhere in the experiences they offer.
The Malhadinha Nova Winery boasts unique characteristics that are ideal for obtaining distinctive wines of the highest quality. It is located only a few metres from the vineyard and takes advantage of the slope of the land so that the whole winemaking process is done by gravity.
The cellar where the barrels are stored was hewn out of the hillside to a depth of several metres and provides excellent conditions for the wine to age.
The wines
This is really heaven for winelovers. You can find some wines I tasted in my review section. They have very good scores and very reasonable prices. Also on Vivino they have very good points. The wines of Malhadinha Nova are elegant, intensely fruity and very complex. They are the result of respect for nature, their passion and dedication. The first plant of the vineyard was planted by Francisca, the first offspring of the family's new generation. The children named the wines and tenderly designed their labels.
Today Malhadinha's wines are a reference, distinguished with several international prizes and exported to over 25 countries.
The restaurant
The Malhadinha Restaurant Wine & Gourmet located in the building of the cellar, offers a signature cuisine with fresh products and contemporary interpretations. Under the guidance of Michelin-starred chef Joachim Koerper, the restaurant offers a modern take on regional dishes. Reasonably priced 3- and 5-course menus change with the seasons and follow the dictates of nouvelle cuisine.
About the family
After many years retailing fine wines throughout Portugal, it was natural that the Soares family should dream of making their own top-quality wines. And now, 10 years on the vineyards are established on their rolling 450-hectare estate.
We loved our stay and can’t wait to return antother time.
