Wohlmuth - Ried Steinriegl Sauvignon Blanc 2019 (90+ TSW)
During our small holiday in the Netherlands I took some nice bottles with me :)
It seems as if we had the best weather, but unfortunately it was disappointing.
Typical Dutch weather :)
About the winery:
The Wohlmuth wine estate is located in Kitzeck in Sausal, about 40 km south of Graz, in the heart of Südsteiermark. The Wohlmuth family has been involved in viticulture here since 1803. Today the company is run by Maria and Gerhard and their son Josef and his wife Marion. The 70 hectares of vineyards have soils with red, gray and blue-black slate. In the vineyards, everything is done by hand. In the cellar, different types of wooden barrels and stainless steel are used.
About the wine:
Wohlmuth Sauvignon Blanc 'Ried Steinriegl' Südsteiermark 2019 comes from the eponymous, very steep vineyard (up to 78% steep and up to 540 meters above sea level), which with its height is one of the best in southern Styria. The terroir is dominated by red slate (Paleozoic slate). After a very late and selective manual picking, a short maceration time, very slow and gentle pressing, the wine was spontaneously fermented in stainless steel tanks and 500 liter oak barrels and then aged for several months on the lees with constant bâtonnage.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright citrus yellow color with silver edges.
On the medium nose aromas of citrus, tropical fruits and white peach with hints of gooseberry, white pepper and flowers.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with medium acidiy and mouthfilling light salty notes. Flavours of lychee, pineapple, white flowers with some white pepper and honey hints. Not an expressive SB but a very delicate example at the beginning of his career. Needs some developing time but worth stocking in the cellar.
A great wine for fine Asian cuisine or fish recipes.
