Wittmann - Riesling Vom Kalkstein Trocken 2019 (90+ TSW)
Spring is in the air and this Riesling fits perfect with the sunny weather.
VDP Gutsweine - basic wines from a winery - form the first acquaintance with the origin-based quality model of the Prädikatsweingüter. They are, in a sense business card of the producer. The wines come from their vineyards and meet the strict standards of VDP. The wines from Wittmann are cultivated biodynamically and cared for by hand.
Intensive vineyard care all year round, low yields and consistent selection of the grapes by hand create the basis for high wine quality. This is followed by a gentle grape and must processing and then a traditional one winemaking. Most of the wines ferment in traditional wooden barrels.
There was a late shoot in 2019, then an overall warm and dry summer, which in Rheinhessen turned into a super autumn with cool nights with a high day-night amplitude. The harvest started three weeks later than 2018, which is remarkable. Clay in the soil holds enough water, which can be a great advantage in dry years.
This is a wine from higher altitudes on pure limestone, a large part comes from Westhofen first vineyards. The wine falls into the VDP.Gutswein category, but in terms of strength and raw material, this is actually a first location. The wine is a bit fuller than the simple estate wine because of the higher maturity.
This wine received high scores from the winecritics. And I understand!
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright citrus yellow color with golden reflections.
On the medium(++) nose peach, citrus, grapefruit and pear with hints of white flowers, thyme and apricot.
On the palate dry, medium(+) bodied with medium(+) acidity and nice freshness. Very clear, pure and intense with a beautiful minerality. Flavours of citrus, pear, melon, salty orange zest in a very precise Riesling. Amazing Gutswein with a beautifull lengthy finish.
