Weingut Wittmann – Niersteiner Riesling Trocken 2017 (90 tsomw points)
Philipp Wittmann is undoubtedly one of Germany's most talented producers and Riesling's world class. His thorough biodynamic method coupled with a thorough knowledge of soil gives their dry Rieslings a very good quality. Every year, his Grosse Gewächse are among the best in Germany.
The secret of Philipp is on several levels. With talent alone you do not get there: Philipp is a Riesling virtuoso. And he is lucky enough to own old vines in one of Germany's best vineyards: Morstein. In this piece of Rheinhessen, the old limestone floor of a million-year-old inland lake rises again. Philipp plays this "lime" completely in his wines: a very tight, puristic and precise style.
About the wine:
The grapes of these wines are all from first and large layers, they are wines of high fruit maturity. Dense and mineral, they show the potential of the top layers of the Region.
Intensive vineyard maintenance all year round, low yields and a consistent selection of the grapes by hand create the basis for a high quality wine. It follows a gentle grape and must processing and then a traditional winemaking. Most of the wines ferment in traditional wooden barrels.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright golden yellow color.
On the nose delicate aromas of peach, nectarine, grapefruit and nice hints of herbs, honey melon, pepper and stony minerals.
On the palate medium+ bodied, dry with fullmouth experience showing flavours of lemon, apricot and spices. Medium+ acidity with a long and persistent finish.
