What the Zweigelt You know this variety?
Zweigelt is a red wine grape variety developed in 1922, at the Federal Institute for Viticulture and Pomology at Klosterneuburg, Austria, by Fritz Zweigelt. It was a crossing of St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. It is now the most widely grown red grape variety in Austria, as well as having some presence in Canada's vineyards. In 2008, Austrian plantations stood at 6,512 hectares, and have expanded in the 2000s as a part of general red wine trend in Austria.
The winery Waldschütz is located in Strass-Elsarn, at the beginning of Kamptal. Kamptal gets its name from the river Kamp that flows directly through it, and is home to Austria’s largest wineproducing town, Langenlois. With an area of 3,907 hectares under vines, Kamptal is one of the most successful wine regions in Austria, and boasts a great number of outstanding producers of top quality wines.
For 4 generations, the secrets of winegrowing art are passed on from father to son. Since 1994, Reinhard Waldschütz, has been directing the fortunes of the 35-hectare family winery. His son Markus has since 2010 his expertise and experience incorporated into the family business.
