Weingut Sattlerhof - Kranachberg Sauvignon Blanc 2016 (91 TSW)
Sauvignon blanc from Austria? What te heck!
And a very enjoyable one!!
In the glass a bright yellow-green color with silver reflections.
On the medium+ smoky nose aromas of grapefruit, gooseberries and mango with hints of lemongrass, herbs and white flowers.
On the palate dry, medium++ bodied with nice complexity, medium++ acidity and nice freshness. Very special palate with flavours of grapefruit, asparagus and apricot with a nice mineral background. Long and complex aftertaste.
This wine should develop very well over the next 5-10 years.
The Südsteiermark is not the most famous wine region in Austria. But it has a strong character and image of its own: it is known as the top region for Sauvignon blanc, also internationally. If one producer contributed to it, it is Sattlerhof, by Willi Sattler. With his enormous love for his country and his perseverance, he has turned Sattlerhof into an exemplary wine company that serves as an ambassador for Austrian wine.
Sattlerhof is located near the village of Gamlitz, about 30 kilometers south of Graz and only 5 kilometers from the border with Slovenia. It is a real family business (since 1887), in which two of their sons, Alexander and Andreas, participate in addition to Willi’s wife Maria. Sauvignon blanc is the undisputed specialty of Sattlerhof. The Loire grape feels perfectly at home in the humid climate with clear Mediterranean influences. However, Sattlerhof is more than sauvignon blanc. Their wines from pinot blanc (weißburgunder), pinot gris (grauburgunder) and chardonnay (called morillon on site) are also very strong. The Sattlerhof family domain cultivates 30 hectares of vineyards in Steiermark (after the Wien wine region, the smallest in Austria)
