About two weeks ago we had a great tasting at @vinoandfriends_maastricht
and after tasting some magical Tuscan reds we finished with this beautiful German Riesling.
For me this was the best “aged riesling” I tried till yet. Here my notes:
In the glass a medium+ golden yellow color.
On the medium+ nose delicate aromas of apple, citrus and ripe peach with hints of petrol, sweet apricot and honey.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with great concentration, softness, roundness, freshness and perfectly in balance. Medium acidity, light sweetness and swiff of minerality and a nice nerverending finish. Bravo Weingut Keller.
Weingut Keller is a family business in the German wine region Rheinhessen, established in Flörsheim-Dalsheim. It was founded in 1789 when the Keller family emigrated from Switzerland to the current location. The vineyards of the Hubacker, already described in 1490, are the very first vineyard property of Keller.
Klaus Keller and his son Klaus-Peter own 19.5 hectares of vineyards, of which 8 hectares have the Erste Lage (VDP-Grosse Lage) qualification. Klaus-Peter and Julia Keller are both qualified oenologists and have been a great winemaker team since 2001. Klaus-Peter did important internships with some big names in French Burgundy: Armand Rousseau and Hubert Lignier. Julia stayed closer to home, including Robert Weil in the Rheingau. The most important German wine guide from Eichelmann says “The Kellers understand perfectly what big Riesling wines are all about.” In this guide, Keller is with 5 stars at the top of the ranking of the best wine companies from Rheinhessen and Weingut in 2014 once again the prize for the best white wine collection from the whole of Germany. The Weingut mainly grows riesling, but the white and red burgunders also have a formidably high standard, right from the simpler 'Gutsweine'. The affinity with large Cru's from Burgundy is often mentioned.
