Weingut Dönnhoff – Riesling trocken 2017 (88 TSW)
Yes! This is absolutely one of the best entry level riesling I tasted. Already very drinkable this lovely refreshing white from the Nahe region.
In the glass a bright citrus amber color.
On the medium+ nose delicate aromas of citrus, mango, yeast and hints of light petrol and flowers.
On the palate dry, medium-bodied with medium+ acidity. Very lively, mineral and refreshing flavours of apricot, tropical fruits with hints of flint, lemon and firestone.
Great thirst quencher for coming summer days.
About the winery
Hermann, the grandfather of Helmut Dönnhoff, started the vineyard in 1920. When Helmut took over in 1966, it only covered 4 hectares of vineyards. There were still a few hectares that were used for growing vegetables and keeping cattle. The vineyards were not qualified as quality vineyards at the time and were therefore many times cheaper. ‘‘Das ganze ding muss klingen‘‘ When Helmut officially bought it in 1971, viticulture got its full attention. He bought vineyards and slowly expanded. He now has 25 hectares of vineyards and he is satisfied with that. Even more expansion would mean that he could spend less time in the vineyards and cellar. Since 2007, his son Cornelius is also helping. Helmut compares the making of wine with the composing of music; there are many beautiful notes, but you have to be able to understand them to make a beautiful song. It is therefore not work that you follow according to a manual. Each grape variety, vineyard and vintage has its own character and Helmut looks at all aspects individually.
