Walter Skoff - Kranachberg Sauvignon Blanc 2017 (89 TSW)
About a month ago we had a virtual @austrianwine tasting with 6 different wines from different regions and varieties from Austria. Austria is very famous for their Grüner Veltliner variety but this Sauvignon Blanc is also a very good example of a quality wine from the Southern Styria - Steiermark wine region. (Today also Formule 1 region ????)
Walter Skoff leads the family vineyard Skoff Original, which covers an acreage of around 60 ha, in the fourth generation. The special climate and the fertile soils of southern Styria create perfect conditions for their aromatic grape varieties and which regularly cause a big respect among international experts.
About the wine:
Hand selection during harvest, in several passes through the vineyards. Classic upbringing on stainless steel, 8 months maturing on the lie.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright citrus yellow color with golden reflections.
On the medium+ nose aromas of grass, gooseberries and kiwi with hints of citrus, nettle and fennel.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with medium+ acidity and nice freshness. Not too much ( like NZ examples) but nicely balanced and elegant. Nice minerality and long fruity finish.
