Vinícola del Priorat - Schwarzer Schiefer 2011 (88 TSW)
Great quality with excellent PQR.
A class of its own. Priorat wines of this quality usually cost far more. From the picturesque steep terraces in Gratallops, harvested from vines up to 60 years old and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques, this blend of Garnacha, Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon combine to create an excellent wine.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a dark purple red color with ruby reflections.
On the medium+ nose you can find aromas of blackberries, plums and cherries with hints of spices, violets, smoke and tobacco.
On the palate dry, full-bodied with good concentration and complexity and medium acidity and tannins. Flavours of red and dark berries, cherries, toast and vanilla. The final is long and elegant.
Founded in 1917, "Vinícola del Priorat" is a truly original winery in the village of Gratallops, 150 km southwest of Barcelona. The schieferlastige, tortuous terrain with over 100 -year-old vineyards brings minimal yields for wines with maximum enthusiasm.
When the phylloxera plague reached the priory at the end of the 19th century, the region was in full bloom. It benefited from the bad luck of another region, where phylloxera raged earlier, nearly 30,000 hectares were planted with vines - today there are about 3,000 - and the priory was the producer number one for quality wines. Then everything was over in one fell swoop, but they did not give up, for which the Vinícola del Priorat played a large part. Under their direction, the winemakers rearranged their vineyards and always had a buyer for their grapes.
To date, Vinícola del Priorat has become the largest producer in the region, managing a total of about 210 hectares of vineyards, some with over 100 years old vines.
