Vinding Montecarrubo - Vignolo 2017 (91 TSW)
During siciliaenprimeur we visited the winery of Peter and Susie Vinding (Danish winemaker) and also one of their sons who helps in the winery.
Peter Vinding has made wine all over the world and has now chosen Sicily as his new home base. He is already well known for he wine he has made in South Africa, Bordeaux and Hungary. (Nice to mention he has also a famous cousin – petter Sisseck from Pingus winery)
In 2005, Susie and Peter bought a small piece of wilderness with some olive and almond trees. For thousands of years, the land was buried by herds of cattle and sheep and now it has been planted for the first time with vines. Half of the terroir seemed ready to be planted immediately, but the other half was littered with huge rocks so it took quite a while to clean everything up.
The wine you see on the picture is from the beautiful Single Vineyard - 100% Syrah from the vineyard site "Vignolo". It’s close to the Ionian Sea and is located on a former seabed which today consists of petrified sand and humus. The cool breeze from the sea helps to cool down the vineyard even in the warmest days of the year.
This 100% Syrah is fermented on natural yeasts followed by malolactic fermentation and maturation in oak barrels of Darnajou, the wine is bottled without clearance or filtration. With their biodynamic viticulture, the wines of Vignolo are rich and generous with a beautiful character.
This was certainly my favorite wine from this winery and a beautiful expression of Syrah in Italy.

In the glass a dark ruby red color with purple reflections.
On the medium+ nose rich aromas of blackberries, dark cherries with hints of wet earth, oak and licorice.
On the palate medium bodied with a soft mouthfeel and medium acidity. Very balanced texture with a light sweetness and nice fatness and medium tannins. Flavours of berries, dark cherries, chocolate and black pepper. Nice fruit in the long aftertaste.
