Vinarija Benkovac - Korlat Vina Syrah 2015
Vinarija Benkovac - Korlat Vina Syrah 2015 (89 TSW)
Three years ago I visited some Croatian wineries on my vacation trip. This red one comes from the Dalmatic Coast in the South region of Croatia. A region I still have to explore. At 8wines.com they have an outstanding selection of wines from this region. In their webshop I also found a selection of wineries that I visited during my vacation trip like Matosevic, Coronica and Meneghetti.
The winery Benkovac was built in the years 1956 to 1957 according to the models of existing wineries in the south of France. Known since its founding in 1956 as a top-quality rose producer and producer of grape distillate for brandy production.
Vinarija Benkovac became well known only in 2005, when new vineyards in Korlat near Benkovac were planted on an area of 103 hectares with 530,000 vines. The winery is also well know because of their Ros? Benkovac wine, one of the best-selling pink wines in Croatia and made from the French variety Grenache Noir.
The wine-growing area includes an assortment of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and Mourvèdre. The stony, loose soils force the struggling vines to dig their roots deep into the ground to access the limited amounts of water, contributing to the aromatic intensity and deeply rich flavors of this wine. A careful oak regimen is also used to soften the tannins and allow this wine to be drunk sooner.
About the wine:
In the glass it shows a clear deep dark purple colour.
On the medium+ nose concentrated aromas blackberries, black currants and dark berries with hints of raisins, tobacco, dark chocolate and spices.
On the palate dry, full-bodied with medium acidity and medium+ ripe tannins. Full of sun dark fruits, coffee and dark chocolate. A bit like Amarone style but not with the sweetness you would expect. A powerhouse Syrah from Croatia.
Surprise your taste buds by trying it with homemade sausages, grilled meats, soft cheeses, as well as barbecue and wild berry desserts.
