90K Followers. So I had to open a special bottle. A bottle with a story. A story of their wine. Thanks for being such great followers over the almost 5 years on IG.
Viña Cobos is the result of the vision of Paul Hobbs, a pioneer who took up the challenge of making wines at a level never before achieved in Argentina. And he succeeded! Paul Hobbs combines his experience of a childhood on the farm with an innovative scientific approach. As a result, he succeeds in making wines that reflect their origins in the purest way. His first trip to Argentina in 1988 marked the beginning of his South American wine career. Convinced of the potential of the country, he joined leading winemakers Andrea and Luis Marchiori. This collaboration has resulted in the leading wine company Viña Cobos.
Over the past twenty years, Hobbs and his team at Viña Cobos have dedicated themselves to finding and developing vineyards in Mendoza's two main growing areas: Luján de Cuyo and Valle de Uco. Some of the vineyards are up to 80 years old. Through careful management of the vineyards and the vinification process, the wines show the true essence of their terroir with finesse plus complexity. Since the production of the first bottle in 1999, Viña Cobos has pushed the boundaries of malbec and Argentina as a wine country.
About the wine:
Aged for 18 months in new French oak (50%) in combination with second use oak (50%) Unfined and unfiltered.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep purple red color.
On the medium+ nose aromas of blueberries, blackberries and black plums with hints of figs, cinnamon, chocolate, sweet spices, violets, vanilla and cedar tones.
On the palate dry, full-bodied with medium+ acidity and medium+ tannins. Great intensity but with elegance with flavours of dark fruits, thyme, tobacco, mocha and dark chocolate. Great long and persistent finish. I would reopen after 10 years. Great potential.
