Vigneti Massa - Piccolo Derthona 2018 (87 TSW)
A wine made from 100% Timorasso.
Timorasso is one of the most exciting Italian autochthonous grape varieties to surface in recent years, from the Colli Tortonesi wine region in south east Piemonte, not far from Gavi in fact.
This ancient variety was brought from the brink of extinction during the '70/80s by the march of multinationals and their preference for facile Chardonnay, Merlot & Barbera. Local boy Walter Massa (winemaker of Vigneti Massa) led the fight to revive this distinguished grape variety during the '80s/90s. In addition to Timorasso, he also grows Barbera and Croatina, which produce equally unique wines.
This wine is the entry level wine made from Timorasso. It’s bigger brother is called Derthona.
Organic farming. Refinement only in steel.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a pale straw yellow color.
On the medium+ nose aromas of pear, citrus and some tropical fruits with hints of herbs, yeast and acacia flowers.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied. Light savory with nice freshness (medium acidity)
Flavours are a recall of the nose with citrus peel and pear. The finish has a medium intensity with nice fruitness and light bitterness.
Not complex, easy drinking but nice.
