Today a battle between the Sangiovese and the Cabernet Franc wine from the Vignamaggio winery located in the Chianti - Tuscany area.
Vignamaggio - Sangiovese di Vitigliano 2015.
Vignamaggio - Cabernet Franc di Vignamaggio Toscana IGT 2016.
Starting with the Sangiovese 2015.
Deep ruby red color.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of dark cherries and black plums with hints of herbs, licorice, spices, flowers, cedar and young leather.
On the palate dry, medium(++) bodied with bright acidity and medium(+) tannins. Ripe, spicy fruit with a recall of the nose. Medium(+) length spicy finish. A very nice 90 TSW score.
Then the Cabernet Franc 2016.
In the glass a deep dark ruby red color.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of blackberries, dark cherries and cassis with hints of chocolate, cloves and mint.
On the palate dry, medium(+) bodied with medium acidity and fine grained tannins. Round mouthfeel with nice complexity, very precise with a recall of the nose with light earth and spices. Long final with chocolate, coffee and spices. For me the winner with 92+ TSW.
Vignamaggio has about 70 hectares of vineyards, distributed over 61 vineyards in 9 different locations on both sides of the hill chain. The soils are therefore diverse. But mainly Galestro, the typical rock that runs through the entire Chianti area.
"Organic farming" is not only practiced in the vineyards, but is complemented by olive groves, fruit trees, cornfields, woods and a pig farm of the ancient "Cinta Senese" breed. Beside their winery there is a restaurant and event or wedding ceremony complex, apartments in restored "farmhouses" to luxurious accommodation in the historic villa or the Hotel Villa Sangiovese.
Soon more about this winery.
