Venica & Venica - Sauvignon Blanc Ronco del Cerò Collio 2017 (90 TSW)
Venica & Venica is a family owned estate with 28 ha of vines in the Dolegna district of Collio (Friuli region). Established in 1930 when Daniele Venica purchased Ronco del Cero. Today the winery is one of Friuli's most well known and respected estates. Giampaolo now has taken over the estate from his father Gianni and uncle Giorgio. The winery is known for highly textural and aromatic whites that use little to no wood in the production of their wines. Varieties of Sauvignon Blanc, Friulano, Pinot Grigio, Malvasia, Ribolla Gialla, Traminer and Chardonnay are planted to white wine production. Varieties of Refosco, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are planted to red wine production.
This Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most complex and detailed versions of this grape I tasted till now.
Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes, planted on slopes in the far northeast of Italy on the border with Slovenia. The wine is partially raised on new French oak and with batonage (gives natural creaminess).
In the glass a bright golden yellow color with greenish highlights.
On the medium nose aromas of citrus zest, white flowers, tea leaves, apple, peach and gooseberries.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied, light creamy and rich with fresh acidity showing flavours of ripe citrus fruit, honey melon, peach. Complex with spices and minerality in the long final. Very good!
Try pairing with pasta with clams, salami, frico (fried Montasio cheese), grilled prawns.
