Umani Ronchi - Casal di Serra Vecchie Vigne Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore 2015 (85 tsomw points)
This story about Umani Ronchi began more than half a century ago in Cupramontana, in the heart of Verdicchio Classico. Today the wine estate Umani Ronchi is owned by the Bianchi-Bernetti family. Three wine regions - Castelli di Jesi, Conero and Abruzzo - and countless vineyards are spread over 10 districts. A total of 210 hectares have been planted with Verdicchio and Montepulciano which are best expressed in Marche and Abruzzo.
The 185 km of vines are nestled between the hills and the Adriatic coast, each with its unique characteristics and terroir. Umani Ronchi has doubled his estate and has replanted 85% of his old vines since the 1970s. They have invested in Verdicchio and Rosso Conero and recovered the Pecorino and Lacrima di Morro d'Alba varieties. Moreover, their vineyards are all biologically processed. This is a technical decision rather than an ideological consideration. The vines bloom in such a way that there is room for a winemaking that gets the best out of the grapes without sacrificing the quality of the wines. (content – goessens wijnen)
Vecchie Vigne Casal di Serra were planted in the early 70s. The wine is aged over a long period, first in concrete tanks in contact with the native yeasts and subsequently in bottle, and that gives this cru its particular fullness and brings out the typical Verdicchio character.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright golden dress.
On the nose intense aromas of peach, apricot and pear with hints of hazelnuts and hay.
On the palate medium/full-bodied with nice freshness and good mouthfeel showing flavours of candied fruit, citrus and anise. Medium aftertaste with light bitterness. A very nice wine with an excellent PQR.
