Tornatore - Etna Rosso 2017 (89 TSW)
Are you getting into the Christmas vibes?
I was refreshing my memories of my Sicily trip.
During my trip to Sicily in May we had the oppurtunity to visit the Tornatore winery where they master the talent to produce great wines from indigenous grape varieties. All grapes come from high-altitude plots on the slopes of Mount Etna. The terroir here contains volcanic rock. During the growth, only the absolutely necessary is done in the vineyard.
A selective manual harvest of the best grapes, an extremely cautious vinification and a long ripening time in the barrel are obvious here. This is how some of the most original wines of Italy arise. Despite their southern European origins, they are rather reminiscent of fine pinot noirs. Etna Rosso 2016, just like its predecessor, received the coveted 3 Glasses (Tre Bicchieri) from the Italian wine bible Gambero Rosso.
About the wine:
This Etna Rosso comes from the skillful vinification of the Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio native grapes from Etna. Manual harvest and double triage on the northern slopes of Etna. Fransesco unravels and crushes the two Nerellos, after which they are fermented in concrete tubs at a low temperature to preserve fraiche. 6 months in old oak barrels.
In the glass this Etna red shows a bright garnet color, light tranparent.
On the medium+ nose delicate aromas of red berries, strawberries and forest fruit with well integrated hints of graphite, blackberries, light barrique with spicy tones.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with great structure, balance and beautiful depth. Medium acidity and medium+ tannins. Flavours of red fruits, prunes and earthy hints. The finish is medium+ with light salty aftertaste. Great to refresh my memory of this wonderful region and wines.
This red goes well with roasts, pasta, cooked meat and white meat.
