Tolaini - Vallenuova - Chianti Classico 2018 (89 TSW)
Owner Pierluigi went to Canada as a boy. There he built on his 'American dream.' He started as a truck driver and 25 years later he was the owner of one of Canada's most successful transportation companies. The fortune he earned enabled him to realize his dream: a state of the art winery in his native Tuscany.
In 1998 he gathered the very best wine professionals around him and started the Tolaini story in Castelnuovo Beraradenga. In less than two years he realized the Tolaini domain and two years later he drank his own wine.
Puirluigi ventured off the beaten track. Success with his Super Tuscans came quickly and high ratings from wine experts came in with great regularity. Nothing was left to chance by his team in the 50 hectares and very densely planted vineyards. Only the best grapes find their way to the ultramodern cellar.
Pier Luigi does not overestimate the use of wood for vinification. He mainly uses small barrels. Its head oenologist and winemaker Francesco Rosi is assisted in production by the top consultant Michel Rolland.
About the wine:
Grapes are manually harvested and sorted twice. The must is kept in contact with the skins for about 20 days. Remontage occurs every 8 hours and one delestage per week. A brief maceration occurs after fermentation. Malolactic fermentation in large French oak of 48 hl each. The wine rests for 10 months in wood of which 4 are on the fine lees, and 4 months in bottle.
My tasting notes:
First let the wine breath for half an hour.
In the glass a bright ruby red color.
On the medium+ nose aromas of dark cherries, plums and blueberries with hints of cedar, toboacco, spices and balsamico.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with medium acidity and medium elegant tannins. Flavours are a recall of the nose with soft round mouthfeel. Nicely balanced with a medium+ length finish. Very accesible quality chianti.
