The Granite Post - Albariño 2017
Pairing Suggestions
The Granite Post - Albariño 2017 (87 TSW)
100% Albariño from two different vineyards in the Salnes sub-area of ??the DO Rias Baixas. About 45% comes from a 60-year-old vineyard in Castrelo planted very close to the Atlantic. The rest comes from 100-year-old vineyards, 5 km further inland in Curras.
The hand-picked fruit is delivered to the winery in small boxes before stripping. The grapes undergo a short maceration before pressing on pneumatic presses. The resulting juice falls transparently into the chilled stainless steel tanks before being racked and fermented.
The fermentation is carried out mainly in a 2500L oak foudre using natural yeasts. A portion is fermented in stainless steel to provide a blending component that can balance the oak influence of the almost new foudre. Malolactic is not controlled and generally takes place, although it is not always 100% (as is the case in 2017). The wines ages in their lies until August after harvest, when the assemblage takes place. The mixture ages for another 3-4 months in tank to harmonize all the elements, before filtration and bottling in late November 2018.
2017 was considered a warm harvest by Rias Biaxas standards, and like much of the rest of Europe, the harvest took place 2-3 weeks earlier than usual. Typically, wines from the early harvests display richness and maturity, but they have strived to balance this with the elegance and freshness of the old and aged blend component.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a pale golden yellow color.
On the medium+ nose aromas of apricot, yellow apples, white flowers and touches of cedar.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with medium acidity. Flavours of baked apple, pear and lemon. Citrus medium finish.
This producer is looking for distribution. Let me know when interested.
