Tenuta di Ghizzano - Veneroso 2016 (90 TSW)
Tenuta di Ghizzano is one of the oldest farms in the area (southeast of Pisa) but also one of the most innovative.
Completely oragnic and biodynamic, today it has about 280 hectares, of which 18 vineyards, 15 olive groves, 100 hectares of cereals and 150 hectares between forests and poplars.
Ghizzano is a small hilly village, about 200 meters above sea level, located on the Tuscan coast in the area known as the "Terre di Pisa" southeast of Pisa, 40 km from Livorno and 40 km south of Pisa.
The landscape is soft and the climate is mild because it is softened by the sea air; without major temperature fluctuations and without major risks of spring frost.
The terrain is a very interesting composite, it constitutes one of the most representative formations of the varied and complex pedological landscape of the Terre di Pisa: it is formed by marine sediments from the geological period called "Astiana" (or Astiana facies), shown through clayey sand more or less limestone, where it is easy to find shell fossils.
About the wine:
Blend of 70% Sangiovese en 30% Cabernet Sauvignon
Hand picked with a further selection of the trusses, for destemming, crushing with feet.
Fermentation With native yeasts in open wooden barrels of 30 hl.
Aging for 16 months in French oak barrels of 500 liters 2nd, 3rd and 4th passage
Annual production From 20.000 to 25.000 bottles, depending on the year.
My tasting notes:
Opened 2 hours before tasting.
In the glass a medium(+) ruby red color with garnet reflections.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of cassis, blackberries and dark cherries with hints of cedar, spices, liquorice, tomato leafs, earth and chocolate.
On the palate dry, medium(+) bodied with medium acidity and ripe medium tannins. Flavours are a recall of the nose with a medium length finish.
