Tenuta Cucco - Barolo Serralunga 2013 (89 tsomw points)
Tenuta Cucco Azienda Agricola is located in Serralunga d'Alba, in the heart of the Barolo in Piedmont.
The vineyards are at a great height. It is not for nothing that 'cucco' means 'top of the hills' in the Piedmont dialect. It's all in the name! The winery has a breathtaking view of the vineyards and the castle. From 1966 to 2015, the estate was owned by the Stroppiana family, but in January the Rossi Cairo family took over the winery. Rossi has made a name with their biodynamic winery La Raia in Novi Ligure.
Tenuta Cucco has 13 hectares of vineyards where mainly Nebbiolo is planted.
About the wine:
The grapes come from 2 different plots in Vughera, both only 2 hectares in size. The soil is characterized by a gray-white lime-clay soil and the vines are between 15 and 50 years old. After the manual harvest, the grapes were de-stoned, pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks for 10 days. After the malolactic fermentation the wine ripened for 24 months in traditional 2.500 liter barrels. Finally the wine ripened for another 12 months in the bottle.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a dark violet color light transparent.
On the nose intense aromas of blackberries, prunes and dark cherries with hints of chocolate, coffee, cedar, liquorice and dried herbs.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with concentrated red fruits and fine grained tannins. Still young but with nice potential. High acidity and long aftertaste.
