Survivor wines - Barrel Select Wild Yeast Chardonnay 2018 (88 TSW)
Chardonnay from the Westerncape – Swartland (above Stellenbosch and Kaapstad)
The internationally most successful label of Overhex is the label of Survivor, which tells the story of the native Nguni cow, the traditional cattle of the Zulu. One day a truck comes loaded with Nguni cows along the Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in Swartland and one of the cows decides to jump off the wagon. In Swartland she builds a new life and even produces offspring. The story emphasizes the Swartlanders motto, in which the free spirit is central.
Vineyard and region Coming from a number of vineyard blocks in Swartland, South Africa. These vineyards have a low yield, around 6 - 7 tons per hectare.
The grapes are picked in the morning to ensure that the grapes arrive cool in the cellar. The grapes are pressed immediately. The juice is fermented in 500 L French barrels . The wine will mature for 11 months in oak after fermentation, before it is bottled.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a medium golden yellow color.
On the medium+ nose aromas of citrus, apricot and quince with hints of vanilla, butter, toast and orangepeel.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with medium acidity and freshness. Rich and round in the mouth and not heavily oaked. Flavours of apricot and quince with vanilla and lime hints. Medium length finish. Best with some food.
To pair with veal, pork tenderloin in mushroom cream sauce, creamy butternut or lobster thermidor.
