Secastilla Viñedos Viejos de Altura Garnacha 2014 (90 TSW)
Spanish Somontano ("at the foot of the mountains") in the northeast of Spain is one of the youngest and most modern wine regions in the country. It was the province of Aragon that founded an investment company that financed wine producers to get the winegrowing off the ground. With success: now about 30 years later, Somontano wines are among the most reliable and best value for money in Spain. In addition to the stunning natural beauty of the vineyards, the region has great shops, places to dine, and tasting rooms.
This 100% Garnacha from a hundred year old vineyard in the Secastilla Valley at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains where old, bushvine Garnachas are cultivated amongst the ancient olive and almond trees is an excellent red wine.
Pre-fermentation maceration lasted three days, slow fermentation at 68°F. Then ten months of aging in new French oak.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep garnet red color with purple reflections.
On the medium+ nose delicate aromas of ripe red currants, raspberries and black cherries with well integrated hints of spices, barrique, tobacco, earth and dark chocolate.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with medium acidity and medium ripe tannins. Very nice balanced, round and elegant in the mouth with a recall of the nose and some extra flavours like licorice and choclate. The finish is pleasant and persistent.
To pair with beef, pasta, lamb, game (venison, game) and poultry
