Rocche Costamagna - Roccardo Langhe Nebbiolo 2016 (88 TSW)
Alot of wine for a great price!
Their winebusiness started way back in 1841 when founder Francesco Antonio Costamagna got the official licence “to retail the wine produced from his own vineyards” in La Morra.
When Francesco died, his son Riccardo, continued to manage the winery with the help of his wife Maddalena. When he died in the 1930s, Riccardo’s wife decided to sell the vineyards located outside La Morra. Wine was produced only for the family’s own consumption and some grapes were sold to other winemakers.
In the late 1960s, Maddalena’s niece, together with her husband restarted the commercial winemaking activity, planted new vineyards and modernised the old winery. Since the mid 1980s their son Alessandro Locatelli has been managing the winery with the help of agronomist Gian Piero Romana and enologist Giuseppe Caviola.
Alessandro has improved the vineyards and wine-making techniques with passion and drawing on the wealth of experience gathered by the family. In the historic center of La Morra, with the restoration of the old farmhouse above the historic cellar of Rocche Costamagna, four elegant rooms have been created for hospitality.
About the wine:
100% Nebbiolo grapes. The vinification is traditional, with the maceration lasting eight days, followed by ageing for 12 months in large Slavonian oak casks and bottle maturation of at least half a year follows.
In the glass a bright transculent ruby red color.
On the medium nose delicate aromas of raspberries, strawberries and blueberries with light floral and earthy hints.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with medium+ acidity and tannins. Nicely balanced with flavours of raspberries, blackberries and licorice. Already drinkable but will be better within three years.
Due to his pleasant character, it is easy to pair with many foods. It’s excellent with meat: braised, roasted, grilled; perfect for cheese.
