Poggio Il Castellare - Brunello di Montalcino 2012 (89 TSW)
We drank this lovely 100% Sangiovese Grosso at @winselerhof during our stay in the hotel @oostwegel_collection
About the wine:
Alcoholic fermentation at controlled temperatures from 10-12 days. Malolactic fermentation in steel.
Maturation in 25 Hl Slavonic oak barrels for 30 months and 225 liters of French oak barrels for 20 months. Further refinement in the bottle for 4 months before it is marketed.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a dark ruby red color with little garnet rim.
On the medium+ nose aromas of ripe cherries, dark berries and plums with earthy hints, leather and flowers.
On the palate medium+ bodied, round and elegant with medium acidity and tannins. Flavours of ripe cherries, dried prune, leather and oak. Nice medium+ final.
The name "Tenuta Poggio Il Castellare" given to the company takes us back to the historical roots of the place: to the remains of an ancient residential area with the remains of houses and towers on top of the homonymous hill next to the vineyards. The vineyards of the company extend on sunny slopes overlooking the evocative landscapes of the Val d'Orcia one, of Mount Amiata the other, and finally the Pian Bossolino vineyard to the mystical vision of the centuries-old Abbey of Sant'Antimo. Poggio Castellare extends over its vineyard area of eight hectares.
