Poggio Argentiera - Capatosta Toscana Rosso 2017 (90 TSW)
A whole lot of wine you get for an excellent price with this blend of mainly Sangiovese and some Alicante from the Maremma wine region.
Poggio Argentiera was founded in 1997 with the purchase of the Adua farm, a property which went back to the early 20th century when the Maremma marshes began to be drained.
The 6 hectares of vineyards began to produce grapes for a Morellino di Scansano and the new cellar was built. In 2001 the property was enlarged with the acquisition of another farm, Keeling, located in Baccinello, a hillside zone in the township of Scansano.
New vineyards were added to the older but prestigious existing ones, and today the winery owns over 21 hectares of vineyards all in the Morellino di Scansano appellation.
Recently the winery was taken over by Tua Rita winery and since the 2014 harvest, the same team as at Tua Rita has been responsible for vinification.
About the wine:
The vineyards are located in the Baccinello area, 350 meters above sea level with soils rich in pebbles of alluvial origin and a prevalence of calcareous clays.
Fermentation: Approximately two weeks of contact between must and skins, both fermentation and ageing in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.
Aging: For 15 months in medium-capacity oak casks, then in bottle for an additional 15 months before commercial release.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a dark ruby red color.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of ripe cherries, plums and dark berries with hints of licorice, smoke, espresso, herbs and cacao.
On the palate dry, medium(+) bodied with medium(+) acidity and tannins. Full and round mouthfeel but also easy drinking with flavours that are a recall of the nose with extra flavours of cloves. Medium(+) length finish.
