Poggio al Sole – Casasilia Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2015 (91 TSW)
100% Sangiovese with around 9.000 bottles
The Davaz family has been making wine in Switzerland since the early 1970s. In 1990, winemakers Kathrin and Johannes Davaz acquired Poggio al Sole, nestled between the towns of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti. They produce 9.000 bottles of this wine, aged in old and new French oak barrels for a minimum of 18 months.
This is the heart of Chianti Classico, arguably one of the top 3 or 4 sites in the entire denomination. In fact, their property is surrounded on virtually all sides by vineyards that are farmed, or belong to, the famous Antinori. Poggio al Sole is one of only two independent wineries in all of Tavernelle Val di Pesa. Antinori makes the rest.
My tasting notes:
Deep ruby red in the glass with garnet reflections.
On the medium++ nose delicate aromas of red currants, cherries and raspberries with hints of vanilla, cinnamon, spices and licorice.
On the palate dry, full-bodied and elegant with a great concentration of dark cherries, prunes, spices, toasted oak and earthiness. The tannins are medium+ just like the acidity. This wines is very drinkable already but will be even better within 3/6 years.
Will pair perfectly with beef, lamb, veal, poultry, salted meat and hard cheeses.
