Podernuovo a Palazzone - Therra 2013 (88 TSW)
Blend of Sangiovese 50%, Montepulciano 35%, Cab & Merlot 15%
PoderNuovo is situated in the southern corner of Tuscany, very near the triangle like border formed with Umbria and Lazio. Located in the tiny hamlet of Palazzone, historically the estate was a mere postal outpost on the important and strategic Via Cassia; the ancient Roman road that connected Rome with Florence and points north such as Lucca and Pistoia.
The estate was largely abandoned and neglected until Giovanni Bulgari and his family resurrected it and now farm a single vineyard that spans 20 hectares and sits about 300 meters above sea level. The composition of the soil ranges from clay to sand and limestone and the vineyard is planted to Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Cabernet, Cabernet Franc and Merlot and for their white wine Greghetto and Chardonnay.
About this wine:
Maceration on the skins for 18 days; alcoholic fermentation at controlled temperature in stainless steel basins; malolactic fermentation in barriques; ageing in 225 litre barriques for 10 months, in cement vats for 6 months and 12 months in bottle.
My tasting notes:
First give this wine a proper decanter and it will open nicely.
In the glass a dark purple color with ruby red edges.
On the medium+ nose aromas of black cherries, dark plums and blueberries with well integrated hints of tobacco, smoke and graphite.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with medium+ tannins and acidity. A recall of the nose with notes of licorice, barrique and dark fruit. The finish is long and persistent. Would give this wine some more time and i twill score even higher.
