Poderi del Paradiso - Saxa Calida 2013 (90 TSW)
Just outside the city limits of San Gimignano is the winery “Poderi del Paradiso”. Vasco Cetti, his wife Graziella Cappelli and their son David run this business with great skill and enthusiasm, spread over 50 hectares within the municipal territory of San Gimignano. Vasco, a surgeon by trade, has been committed to viticulture since the 1970s. His family is one of the oldest in San Gimignano and has owned these vineyards since the Middle Ages.
Currently, the family business is growing 30 hectares of the total area with vines. Together with oenologist Paolo Caciorgna, they achieve an annual yield of 150,000 bottles and this is still increasing thanks to the planting of new vines.
About the wine:
Tuscan blend with equal parts of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Fermentation and maceration for 3-4 days in a Rotovinificatore at controlled temperatures. Malolactic fermentation. Aged in a new barrels in a French barrels for 16 months.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep ruby red color.
On the medium+ nose aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries and cassis with hints of toasted cedar, spices, coffee, leather and vanilla.
On the palate dry, full-bodied with medium+acidity and medium+ tannins with flavours of dark fruit, balsamico, coffee and spices. Medium+ length finish with chocolate notes.
