Podere Sapaio - Volpolo 2018 (89/90)
Great memories to this Bolgheri blend. I visited them about three years ago.
A beautiful "estate", 25 hectares in Bolgheri. At the helm here is Massimo Piccin, engineer from Verona, who has been able to realize his dream here since 1999.
One of his mottos: "Great wines can't do without men's great passion". The wines undergo their alcoholic fermentation in steel and the "malo" takes place in oak barrels. Refining takes place in French barrique for 8 - 18 months depending on the cuvée and the vintage.
Still young this red with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Petit Verdot.
First I decanted this young wine.
In the glass a deep purple red color.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants and forest fruit with hints of cedar, liquorice, violets and tobacco.
On the palate dry, medium(+) bodied with medium(+) acidity and medium not disturbing tannins. Round and soft in the mouth with dark and red fruit, earth, cedar, black pepper, tobacco and herbs. Nice medium(+) length. Lots of wine for this price.
To pair with roast wild duck breast with blackberries, Tournedos Rossini, grilled Cote de Boeuf, Gruyere cheese.
