Pico Cuadro - Vendimia Seleccionada 2016 (88 TSW)
In June 2019 I visted the Ribera del Duero region. A fantastic region to explore. Very compact with lots of great quality wineries like Aalto, Pingus and Vega Sicilia but also new wineries are working to get at that level.
Pico Cuadro is one of the wineries that is located in the Golden Mile of the Ribera del Duero region. The area is recognized globally for its prestigious vineyards and wineries. 'Pico' stands for the famous mountain next to the domain. 'Cuadro' shows the square window of the bodega, which is clearly visible from the tip of the mountain. On the label this is subtly represented by a triangle in a square: Pico Cuadro.
Their philosophy centers on the selection of old vineyards with a low yield per hectare (2,000 – 4,500 kg). The vines are an average age of 60 years old, planted on dry slopes at an average elevation of 850 meters above sea level.
About the wine:
This 100% Tempranillo wine is a blend of grapes from several old vineyards and vines more than 60 years old, farmed using the gobelet system. The vinification of each vineyard’s harvest is made in unique French oak vats of 5,500 l each. Aging for 14 months in French oak barrels.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a dark red color with purple reflections.
On the medium+ nose aromas of ripe cherries, blackberries and plums with hints of vanilla, herbs, choclate and liquorice.
On the palate dry, medium++ bodied with medium+ acidity and tannins. Nicely balanced and powerful flavours of dark fruits, spices and barrique. Medium+ finish. Enough potential to get higher in points.
