Panizzi - Vernaccia di San Gimignano Santa Margherita 2018 (90+ TSW)
Last week we had a cold week in the Netherlands with temperatures around -15 celcius at night. After opening this bottle the weather changed a lot :) With almost spring temperatures.
This beautiful white wine from the Vernaccia grape is highly regarded by Italian gastronomes. It is not without reason that Vernaccia di San Gimignano is one of the few white wines with DOCG status; the highest Italian quality category. Panizzi is also considered one of the best producers in the area: They turn the grapes from this small Santa Margherita vineyard into a great white wine. Soon I will taste more of their wines.
Soft pressing with alcoholic fermentation in barrique (about 50%) and in steel (about 50%) at a controlled temperature. The two compounds go through an aging period of five to six months in the same containers of the fermentation, after which they are assembled. The wine is prepared for bottling. This wine is worth exploring and has good aging potential.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a very bright citrus yellow color with greenish reflections.
On the medium nose delicate aromas of peach, ripe lemon and grapefruit with hints of light butter, aspargus, herbs, orangezest and bread crust.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with medium(+) acidity and great freshness. Refined and balanced with flavours that are a recall of the nose with extra flavours like light vanilla, banana, wet stone and pear. A wine that's good already but also with a good aging potential.
It pairs well with Fish risotto and pasta, shellfish, white meats, mediummature cheeses, recipes containing saffron.
Imported and distributed in the Netherlands by Les Genereux.
