Orto Vins - Les Comes d’Orto Montsant 2016 (87 TSW)
This wine is a blend of 3 different varieties: Garnacha (50%), Samsó (45%) and Tempranillo (5%). (Samso is Carignan or Cinsault) and 2016 achieved 92 Parker Points.
The grapes which are used to produce Les Comes d’Orto come from 3 different estates: Coma Nicolau, Coma Requera and Coma Gigolà, which are located at altitudes varying between 120 and 234 metres. The vineyards are home to mainly calcareous soils, with abundant amounts of clay and gravel. The vines are traditional low bush vines and are between 37 and 70 years old. The Agriculture on the vineyard is carried out in an environmentally friendly manner.
Once the harvest has been carried out and the grapes have been transported to the winery, the grapes for Les Comes d’Orto are left to macerate for 28 days. Following this, fermentation takes place in 500 litre capacity wooden tanks at a controlled temperature of 30º. Finally, Les Comes d’Orto is aged for 12 months in fourth year French oak barrels. The wine is then bottled following a light filtration to ensure that impurities are removed from the wine.
Orto Vins is a young winery founded by four partners in 2008 and is situated in the town of El Masroig (Tarragona – Catalunya). The aim of the company is, with the use of old vines, to find the best expression of the native varieties.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a a light transparent ruby red color.
On the medium++ nose ripe red fruits like cherries, raspberries and plums with hints of violets, smoke, spices and figs.
On the palate medium bodied with fine tannins, medium acidity with lots of red and black fruits. Flavours of red berries, cherries and plums with liquorice hints. Ending with light mineral nuances.
Pairs great with chicken stew, beef, cold meat, small game and rice with meat.
