Ornellaia - Le Volte dell’Ornellaia 2017 (88 TSW)
Winemaking has been in the blood of the Marchese lodovico Antinori family since the 13th century. His brother is in charge of the family business @marchesiantinori and his uncle is the owner of Tenuta san Guido where the world famous Sassicaia is made.
Tenuta dell’Ornellaia is located in Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy. The soil type resembles that of Saint Emillion in Bordeaux. In 1981 Lodovic had his hyper-modern wine company built and planted Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. He is supported by top specialists, Michel Rolland, from Pomerol for the Merlot, Tibor Gál the young Cabernet master from Hungary and Danny Schuster for the Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. The top wines from Tenuta dell'ornellaia are the Ornellaia on Cabernet basis and the Masseto on Merlot basis.
This is the entry level wine of Tenuta dell'Ornellaia and is made with Merlot, Cabernet and Sangiovese grapes. The Sangiovese grapes come from vineyards around Bolgheri. After vinification, this wine ages for 6 months in oak barrels that were first used for the Ornellaia.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright ruby red color with a purple rim.
On the medium nose aromas of red cherries and ripe blackberries with hints of liquorice, vanilla and laurel.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with medium acidity and tannins. Easy going, well balanced with nice round mouthfeel and aftertaste. No complex wine but one which everyone likes. Cheers.
