Oenops - Vidiano 2019
Pairing Suggestions
Oenops - Vidiano 2019 (88 TSW)
Today a new wine from the Greek winery Oenops and this one does not disappoint either. The Onoeps winery was founded in 2015 by Nikos Karatzas and it is the most newly established winery in the region of Drama. Its main purpose is to produce highest quality wines in limited quantities. The grapes come from personally selected vineyards from Drama and Macedonia in general, that are cultivated from ambitious winegrowers.
The vineyards of this white wine are situated in the mountainous region of Heraklion in Crete. Elevation of 300m, with 17 year old vines with a limestone soil.
Three different fermentation methods on the same vineyard plot. Spontaneous fermentation in amphoras, 5hl barrels and stainless-steel tanks. Blended right after fermentation, following tasting of each partial lot. Six months aging on the fine lees in amphoras. Bottled unfiltered.
My tasting notes:
Wines from Vidiano (variety) are leaning more towards a textural style, rather than exploding aromatics.
In the glass a bright citrus yellow color.
On the medium nose aromas of bruised apples, peach and citrus zest with hints of white flowers, honey, smoke and sweet herbs.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with medium acidity and nice freshness. Light creamy in the mouth with flavours of stone fruit, lime, spices and apple skin with a medium light salty length finish.
Serve as a great match for fish, salads, and a large variety of cheeses.
