Nik Weis / St. Urbans-Hof - Urban Dry Riesling 2018 (89 TSW)
The Moselle is known for its cool climate, the steep slopes and the slate that retains the heat and releases slowly at night. Nik strives to make the most authentic Riesling on the Moselle. He is very proud to be a Moselle winemaker. Only the best grapes are harvested manually and in the cellar he follows the rhythm of nature. He prefers natural fermentation, with as little intervention as possible.
The Riesling winery in Leiwen on the Moselle is managed by the third generation of Nik Weis and his family. Since 2000, the winery has been a member of the renowned Association of German Quality Wineries (VDP). The approx. 45 hectares of vineyards stretch for around 60 km along the Moselle and Saar rivers and are cultivated in a traditional manner in harmony with nature. Five of the prestigious individual layers, in which world-class Rieslings grow, are classified as VDP. Large layers.
One of Niks Weis's statements: “I produce almost 100% Riesling, but I always say „I don’t make Riesling, I make Mosel!“ You can make great Rieslings in many regions of the world, but the style of Riesling you can produce in the Mosel is so characterful and unique, it is not really about the grape variety itself, it’s about what the conditions in the Mosel make out of it.
About this wine:
The Urban name on the label is not meant as a reference to the city life, as you might think, but a reference to Saint Urban of Langres, a patron saint of vintners.
I believe that this one is their entry level Riesling. A real bargain if you ask me.
In the glass a bright golden yellow color.
On the medium+ nose aromas of green apple, lime, peach with hints of honey, fruitcake and wet stones.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with a small playful sweetness with soft acids. Dry attack with citrus, light sweetness and nice round creamyness with apple, grapefruit hints. The finish is fairly long with peachy flavours.
