Moccagatta - Barbaresco Cole 2009 (90 tsomw points)
100% Nebbiolo from the town of Babaresco.
The Moccagatta domain has been named after the hamlet of Barbaresco where it was established in 1952 by Mario Minuto, father of the current owners Francesco and Sergio. More than half of the vineyards are planted with the local Nebbiolo for the production of powerful wood-ripened Barbaresco's.
They make a base wine Barbaresco with grapes from different vineyards and three cru's, 'Basarin', 'Cole' and 'Bric Balin'. In addition, the Minuto brothers also produce a wood-ripened Langhe Chardonnay 'Buschet', which develops beautifully during several years, and a mouth-filling Barbera d'Alba. In the meantime, Martina Minuto, the founder's granddaughter, is also taking her first steps in the family domain.
About the wine:
Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats with yeasts selected from Nebbiolo.
Ageing in French oak barriques for 18 months and bottle refining for at least 9 months. Bottles produced: 2.500
Tasting notes:
First it’s the best to give this wine a good decanter.
In the glass a deep dark ruby red color.
On the nose intense aromas od dark cherries, strawberries, licorice and cinnamon with hints of roasted herbs, oak and vanilla.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with high acidity and tannins. There is still a clear youth to the structure along with red cherries, cranberries, herbs, rose petals, and a touch of leather.
This is certainly on the youthful side, but, it starts to really open up with air.
