Mas Romani - Bodegas Mas Alta - La Basseta Priorat 2004
Pairing Suggestions
Mas Romani / Bodegas Mas Alta - La Basseta Priorat 2004 (92 TSW)
Bodegas Mas Alta is a young wine estate and is located in the town of Vilela Alta in Priorat. This area in Catalonia together with Rioja has the highest possible qualification (DOC). This winery belongs to Belgian owners and they strive for high quality. They let their wines age on small French barriques.
Since 1999, 40 hectares have been planted on classified soils in Priorat. The vineyards are located on higher ground composed of slate and llicorlla. This soil makes their wine unique. The old vines provide characteristic and complex wines.
About the wine:
50% old vine Cariñena, 40% Garnacha, 5% Syrah and 5% Merlot, tank aged on lees and the rest of the cuvee is aged for 16 months French oak.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep red color with light brownish rim.
On the medium++ nose aromas of ripe black fruit, earth, cacao, leather, vanilla and barnyard with a light medicinal touch.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with soft well integrated tannins and nice balance. Flavours are a recall of the nose with a long aftertaste. At is peek so drink now.
Would like to try also a younger version of this one.
To pair with beef, lamb, game (deer, wild), poultry and cheeses.
