Mario Schiopetto - Pinot Grigio Collio DOC 2018 (89 TSW)
Mario Schiopetto was born in 1930 as the son of Angela and Giorgio. He grew up in the family's Osteria during the interwar period. Later he became a fireman and truck driver. For years he helped his father select wines for the Osteria, which he personally managed after the death of his parents.
In 1963 Mario, guided by his love and passion for wine, starts producing wines. In 1965 he was the first to produce a wine made only from Friulano, an indigenous grape from Friuli. Thus begins the modern history of Friuli white wine, which also changed the concept of Italian white wine.
About this wine:
The Pinot Grigio grapes grow in the Capriva vineyards, located in the Collio DOC. History and tradition intertwine in this extraordinary Collio terroir with its particularly elegant wines. The total area of the vineyards in this area is 18 ha. The vineyards are located in hilly terrain with marble-like rocks from the Eocene era.
The grapes are picked by hand at the end of August. After picking and careful selection for the quality of the grapes, they are gently pressed. The fermentation takes place for a period of 10 to 12 days in large steel barrels, at a controlled temperature of 16 ° C. The further maturation of the wine takes place for a period of 8 months in large steel barrels, after which it is bottled. In the bottle, the wine further refines for at least 5 months in the cellars of the domain.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright golden yellow color.
On the medium nose aromas of peach, pear and banana with hints of honey, lychee and white blossom.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with medium acidity and nice freshness. Flavours are a recall of the nose with a medium(-) chalky citrus length finish. 5 more bottles to go. Very curious how this wine will be in 1 or 2 years. The collio wines can age very well.
