Louis Guntrum - Pettenthal GG 2015
Pairing Suggestions
Louis Guntrum - Pettenthal GG 2015 (91 TSW)
Konstantin Guntrum is the current owner of the Louis Guntrum winery, already founded in 1648 in Nierstein, Rheinhessen.
Konstantin Guntrum has been running the winery since 2003. He went in search of the best terroirs from Nierstein, which were much less in demand at the time. He started leasing and later the vineyards were bought. With a foresight to the future, he is now literally and figuratively reaping the benefits.
This is confirmed by the current winemaker Dirk Roth, former winemaker of the world famous Schloss Vollrads. Dirk sees the terroirs of Guntrum as a strong point. Nierstein is known for the "Roter Hang", a red slate terroir that ensures sleek and clean Rieslings. In addition, Guntrum has vineyards in the clay and loam-covered Oppenheim, where his Rieslings have a somewhat more rustic and richer taste expression.
Back to the wine:
From the Grosses Gewächs / Grand Cru vineyard 'Pettenthal' in Nierstein, Rheinhessen. The vineyards are located along the banks of the Rhine on very steep slopes. The grapes are picked by hand.
The juice is fermented at a controlled temperature of 18 degrees in stainless steel tanks. After fermentation, the wine matures on the lees ('sur lie'). This softens the wine and gives the wine extra complexity.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a medium golden yellow color.
On the medium+ nose aromas of ripe apricot, yellow apple, pears and peach with hints of spice and light petrol.
On the palate dry, medium+bodied with beautiful roundness and mouthfeel. Nicely balanced flavours of lime, apple, ripe peach and honey. Long and fruity fresh finish.
To pair with pork, shellfish, spicy food, poultry and salted meat.
