LenzMark - Grüner Veltliner 'New Chapter' 2020 (92 TSW)
Wonderful Grüner I found on @8wines from joint venture LenzMark
LenzMark is a joint venture of two major players in the Austrian wine world: Lenz Moser V. (also from winery Chateau Changyu Moser) and Markus Huber. The two pursue a simple goal: they want to help grüner veltliner to an international breakthrough. In Austria itself, the grape is already unbeatable in popularity and it has quite a few fans in other German-speaking regions as well. However, the veltliner does not yet play a role in the world's major metropolises. And that is exactly what Moser and Huber want to achieve. They try this with a veltliner 2.0, which presents itself in a completely new style.
Their New Chapter Gruner is crafted with top quality fruit from the Niederösterreich, with the majority coming from the Traisental Valley where Markus Huber’s winery is located. The vineyards here are planted on terraces on steep slopes where the meagre soils put pressure on the vines, producing small quantities of very concentrated fruit. Once in the winery the must is fermented in stainless steel tanks and left to mature on the lees before bottling.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright citrus yellow color.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of green, yellow apple, citrus and tropical fruits like pineapple and guave with hints of spices, light flowers and grapefruit.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with medium(+) acidity, great sapidity and freshness. Flavours are a recall of the nose with extra flavours of stonefruit, wet stones and salty hints. Very drinkable and before you know it the bottle is empty. The finish has a medium(+) length finish.
To give this veltliner the attention it deserves, I recommend enjoying it solo. At least when you try it for the first time. In addition, it goes wonderfully with fatty fish such as tuna or salmon. Pickled vegetables such as aubergines are also recommended.
