Le Mortelle / Marchesi Antinori - Poggio alle Nane 2018 (91+ TSW)

The Mortelle estate is in the heart of Maremma in Tuscany, near the town of Castiglione della Pescaia set in an extraordinary and fascinating position both for the territory’s unparalleled natural beauty and its historical heritage and culture. The Antinori family has been part of this territory for generations.
Poggio alle Nane’s name comes from the area where its vines grow. Duck breeding farms once existed and the name “Nane” is local dialect for duck. The vineyards extend from the hillside to the lake that are still part of the property.
The wine consists of the best Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes with a small percentage of Carménère grapes added. The grapes are carefully picked by hand after which they undergo the first fermentation in stainless steel tanks for 20 days. The malolactic fermentation then takes place in small oak barrels. The maturation then continues in French wooden barrels for 16 months. A meticulous and lengthy process, which is necessary to convert these perfect grapes into a great wine.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep dark ruby red color.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of blueberries, blackberries and black currants with hints of chocolate, roses, cedar, eucalyptus and fruit liquorice.
On the palate dry, full-bodied with medium(+) acidity and medium(+) fine grained tannins. Still a bit "green" (young) but with great potential. Warm, round and concentrated mouthfeel with nice complexity. Flavours are a recall of the nose with a long and persistent finish.
Excellent in combination with lamb and roast meat, ideal with all game recipes.
