Kanonkop - Kadette Pinotage 2013 (88 TSW)
This famous estate is located in Stellenbosch, on the flanks of the Simonsberg. The vineyards have a south-eastern orientation and enjoy the cool influence of the winds coming from Antarctica. In the period of the first settlers there was on the hill, from where they could see the ships arriving in Cape Town, a cannon. They shot this cannon to warn the local farmers that a ship was arriving so they could go to the harbor to sell their fruit and vegetables.
The domain covers 100ha of vineyard, only red grapes, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. In 1949, Kanonkop was the first producer to have planted Pinotage on a large scale. This hybrid grape variety is the result of a cross-pollination of a male Pinot Noir with a female Cinsaut.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a dark ruby red color.
On the medium+ nose aromas of ripe raspberries, blackcurrant with hints of rubber, mocha and vanilla.
On the palate dry, medium+-bodied with medium acidity and tannins. Flavours of dark cherries, dark chocolate, pepper, herbs and blackberries. Nice and long aftertaste.
