Juan Gil - Special Limited Edition Jumilla DOP 2016 (87 TSW)
20th anniversary of @adbibendum wineimporter.
100% Monastrell (Mourvedre) from Jumilla region. This is what the winery says about this special bottle.
Miguel Gil: 'This wine is specially made to commemorate the 20th anniversary of ad Bibendum. The idea behind this is to capture the soul of the two families, the Monard and the Gil Vera. Juan Gil's special 'ad Bibendum 20th Anniversary' shows the authenticity of our 15-year-old friendship and the nobility of our collaboration, which goes far beyond a simple business relationship. This virtue has become solid over the years and leads us to a promising future.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep vibrant ruby red color.
On the medium+ nose aromas of blueberries, blackberries and plums with hints of cinnamon, smoke, black pepper and balsamico.
On the palate dry, medium++ bodied with medium acidity and tannins. Concentrated and round mouthfeel with black fruit and spices. Nice long finish.
Great price, quality from Spain. Olé
Since 1966, Jumilla has had the D.O. status. Jumilla is located in the east of Spain, between Yecla and Murcia. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 400 - 800m.
During the epidemic of phylloxera in the 19th century, Jumillia was spared well and a period of economic expansion began. Wine traders from France bought large quantities of wine from this area during the phyloxera period. Most of the vines were therefore still inoculated for a long time.
Unfortunately, the Phylloxera finally entered Jumilla in 1989, destroying around 60% of the vineyards.
The replanting was initially slow, but this catastrophe had the advantage that it gave an enormous boost to the introduction of the most modern techniques that had previously led to salute successes in the surrounding areas of Alicante and Almansa. The most important grape of Jumilla is the native Monastrell. The Monastrell grape is very resistant to the drought and heat in the area.
