Höpler - Blaufränkisch 2013
Pairing Suggestions
Höpler - Blaufränkisch 2013 (86 TSW)
The Blaufränkisch is a thoroughly central European variety. This traditional Austrian variety is a cross between Blauer Zimmettraube and Weißer Heunisch. Blaufränkisch was previously widely-planted throughout the Habsburg Monachy, and is the most important variety in Mittelburgenland, called Blaufränkischland.
This Blaufränkisch variety was first documented in the 18th century in Austria. At that time, in what was then Germany, it had the name of Lemberger or Limberger, which was derived from the town of Limberg – today Maissau – in Niederösterreich. In Hungary known as Kékfrankos.
This traditional Austrian variety was used as a crossing partner for Austrian new breeds like Zweigelt, Blauburger, Roesler and Rathay. Even breeding stations abroad used the variety for crossings.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a garnet red color.
On the medium nose aromas of red cherries, blueberries with light hints of ceder, chocolate and earth.
On the palate dry, medium-bodied with medium acidity and soft tannins. Easy going red which will be very nice to drink in the summer lightly chilled.
Winery Höpler are celebrating 15 years of höplers weinräume on Saturday June 15th from 2pm to 7pm. There will be guided tours through the wine rooms, an opportunity to taste new vintages and a delicious bbq too.
