Henri Boillot - Bourgogne a Meursault 2018 (92 TSW)
This 'entry level' Chardonnay from Henri Boillot really turned a smile on my face.
The grapes for this wine come from several vineyards in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Auxey-Duresses and Saint Romain.
Soil consists of calcareous clay. Plant density is 10,000 sticks per hectare and yield 50 hl/ha.
The vinification is only 5% in new oak barrels. The other part is completely in barrels of 1 to 2 years old. The wines are bottled after an aging of 10 months.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a medium citrus yellow color.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of lemonpeel, peach and yellow and green apples with hints of flint, light cedar, light butter and white blossom.
On the palate dry, medium (+) bodied with medium (+) acidity and nice freshness. Medium(+) intensity in the mouth with crispy fruits, lime, green apple, flint and a medium(+) length finish.
The Domaine Henri Boillot was founded in 1885 and since 1975 the grandson of the founder has been at the helm. He also founded the négoce in 1995 and propelled the domain to great heights. Henri's son, Guillaume, has been involved in the domain since 2008. Initially, Guillaume was solely responsible for the vineyards, but since 2019 he is also fully responsible for the vinification of all wines.
With this, the next generation has come to the head of this beautiful wine estate. With vineyards in Volnay, Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault and every year as a négociant, several Grand Crus such as Clos de Vougeot, Latricières-Chambertin, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Le Montrachet and many other appellations, it is a unique domain belonging to the top of Bourgogne.
