Hardys Wine - Shiraz 'HRB' Heritage Reserve Bin 2016 (87+ TSW)
Thomas Hardy was a true pioneer. He recognised that different areas boasted unique qualities and characteristics that could complement and enhance one another. So, all the way back in 1865, he began blending grapes from multiple regions. The HRB range is his legacy. Made using components from the very best Australian regions for that specific grape variety.
Hardys HRB Shiraz brings together three of Australia’s top Shiraz regions: McLaren Vale for dark chocolatey richness, Clare Valley for structure and tannin, and Pyrenees in Victoria for it's aromatics.
Today, Paul Lapsley, the company's 19th Chief Winemaker, is responsible for vinification. Under his leadership the Hardy Brands developed into wines that are known for their class and quality. Wine brands such as The Journey, HRB, Eileen Hardy, Thomas Hardy, Winemakers Rare Release, Stamp Of Australia, Crest, Nottage Hill, William Hardy and Oomoo are in their portfolio.
2016 was a vintage of high yields yet high quality. Cool, wet winter, followed by a warm spring retained enough soil moisture to encourage healthy vine growth. Nearing harvest ripening was given a little boost by a bout of warm weather with some sporadic rain events. Across the three regions, the fruit was healthy and mature at complementary admirable sugar levels coming into harvest season.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep purple color, almost black.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of mulberries, blackberries and black olives with hints of tar, cacao, mint, cedar and spices.
On the palate dry, full-bodied with medium(+) acidity and soft tannins. Flavours are a recall of the nose with a medium length chocolate aftertaste. Can get better with some more time.
