Giovanna - Vurria Nero d'Avola 2017 (86 TSW)
Today a very nice organic wine from Sicily.
The Di Giovanna winery is located on the slopes of Monte Genuardo, a protected natural area. The five family vineyards are organically grown and are located in the small DOC of Contessa Entellina and Sambuca di Sicilia, in the heart of the Terre Sicane.
The vines grow on mixed clay and volcanic tuff soils, organic cultivation at an altitude 1,300 to 1,600 feet.
Soil Clay mix and volcanic Tuff. The Destemmed grapes are fermented in stainless steel, on the skins for about 12 days, followed by soft pressing. Aging 6 months in second passage barrels and tonneaux.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep ruby red color with garnet reflections.
On the medium nose aromas of ripe cherries, red berries and undergrowth with hints of dark chocolate, lavender, cedar and spices.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with medium acidity and soft tannins. Smooth and warm in the mouth with juicy fruit, chocolate, espresso and spices. Finish is fresh with fruit and chocolate.
