FX Pichler - Grüner Veltliner Dürnsteiner Smaragd 2016
Pairing Suggestions
Yesterday we had a great sunny day in the Netherlands and this wine from Austria hit the spot right in the middle.
FX Pichler - Grüner Veltliner Dürnsteiner Smaragd 2016 (90 tsomw points)
When Franz Xaver, as the fourth generation of the family wine estate Pichler, took over the wine from his father, the total vineyard property was about three hectares. Meanwhile, the vineyard has grown to 16 hectares and the vineyards are planted with 50% grüner veltliner, 48% riesling and 2% sauvignon blanc. Franz Xaver (FX) now runs the winery with his son Lucas and daughter-in-law Johanna.
Franz Pichler senior succeeded already in 1928 in selecting an old grüner veltliner clone with small grapes, which ensures a higher must weight and more extract. This clone is still planted in the vineyards.
Tasting notes:
In the glass a bright yellow color with greenish reflections.
On the nose delicate and light smoky aromas of mango, orange zest with light hints of herbs and spicyness.
On the palate dry, medium/ full-bodied, juicy with excellent acidity showing flavours of peach, apricot and white pepper with a spicy minerality. An extremely appealing and quite complex grüner veltliner.
Give it some time, then the GV will show even more!
